The stupid hurts. Marco Rubio reportedly said officials would “look into Abdul El-Sayed’s immigration status” and investigate whether he committed fraud. There’s just one major problem with that line of attack:Abdul El-Sayed was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan. He is a U.S. citizen by birth. So what exactly is there to investigate about his “immigration status”?This is why the comment is getting mocked. El-Sayed’s name, religion, and background may sound “foreign” to some people, but none of that changes the basic fact that he was born in the United States. If political opponents want to challenge El-Sayed, they have plenty of legitimate options: debate his healthcare policies, foreign policy views, economic proposals, or record in public office. But questioning the immigration status of someone born in Michigan only makes the attack look careless and uninformed.Maybe politicians should check the most basic facts before suggesting federal investigations.Because in this case, the answer was never difficult to find.Abdul El-Sayed is American-born.Marco Rubio might want to start with Google before starting an investigation.
