Surgeons at Beilinson Hospital have performed Israel’s first implantation of a fully personalized, 3D-printed chest wall in a woman in her twenties with an exceptionally rare cancer of the sternum.
After removing nearly the entire front of her chest wall, doctors reconstructed her sternum and rib cage with a custom implant designed to match her anatomy with millimeter-level precision. The specialized polymer is designed to allow the patient’s own tissue to grow into it over time.
The hospital is now preparing a similar procedure for a 15-year-old cancer patient, using a personalized 3D-printed implant to replace nearly half of his pelvis.
