DISCOVERY IS A BITCH
President Donald Trump filed an emergency motion Wednesday to block the BBC from gaining access to his financial records, in the latest sign that his own $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British broadcaster is backfiring.
The motion came one day before a court-ordered Thursday deadline for Trump to begin handing over detailed financial information covering more than 400 business entities held in his family trust. U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett had ruled in July that the BBC was entitled to those records as part of its defense in the case.
Trump's legal team accused the BBC of having "clearly political motivations" and argued the injury from disclosure would be "complete and irreversible."
"The moment those records reach the BBC, the injury is complete and irreversible," the filing read. His lawyers also asked the court to amend the original lawsuit to narrow its focus to reputational harm only, which would limit the scope of financial disclosure required.
The lawsuit stems from a 2024 BBC Panorama documentary titled "Trump, A Second Chance," which Trump claims damaged his business interests by splicing lines from his January 6, 2021 speech to make it appear he directly urged supporters to attack the Capitol. The BBC apologized for the edit but has maintained the defamation claims have no merit. Trump has also claimed, without evidence, that the BBC used AI to alter his speech, which the network has denied.
Recent financial disclosures show Trump made more than $2.2 billion during his first year back in office. The lawsuit is one of several recent attempts made by the Trump administration to start legal battles against media outlets that publish critical coverage of him.
