So apparently… two 16-year-old girls attended the Indiana Fever game against the Seattle Storm wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts and holding a sign thanking Sophie Cunningham for speaking up for girls. The message referred to Cunningham’s public opposition to transgender athletes competing in female sports. According to the girls and witnesses, they faced hostile reactions from some people inside Climate Pledge Arena.
The girls said Seattle Storm minority co-owner Celeste Keaton confronted them, used profanity, and called them insane. One of the teenagers was reportedly left in tears. Other claims about players or fans joining the hostility have circulated, but those details remain based mainly on witness accounts and should be described as allegations.
The Seattle Storm later apologized for the exchange and said fans should be treated with respect. The WNBA also suspended Keaton from five home games and fined the team. Cunningham called the incident embarrassing, supported the teenagers, and repeated that her position is about protecting female sports rather than attacking anyone.
