Mayor Mamdani was branded an anti-business radical. Now New York City’s small business owners are celebrating his sweeping plan to cut regulations, fees and paperwork.
The mayor announced 50 policy changes, including eliminating separate permits for restaurants serving ice cream, extending barbershop license renewals from one year to three, reducing street fair fees and speeding up restaurant inspections. He’s also expanding NYC Best to give each of the city’s 180,000 small businesses access to a caseworker who can help navigate city government.
“These people are serious. They really care about small businesses,” Queens cafe owner Dawn Kelly said. “They get shit done.”
Republicans called Mamdani a communist who wanted to confiscate small businesses. The actual socialist mayor just delivered the kind of deregulation conservatives claim to support.
Could competent government matter more to voters than political labels?
