The Skating Minister (1790s) by Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) is arguably the most famous Scottish painting.The full title of this painting is The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch. Walker was a member of the Edinburgh Skating Club, the first figure skating club formed anywhere in the world. But skating was not really a popular sport in Scotland. Walker had instead learned it in The Netherlands, where he had grown up. I like the relative simplicity of the painting, which shows the minister against an indistinct lake background. His dark figure clearly stands out, and he simultaneously looks to be standing perfectly still and elegantly moving forward at the same time.
