AK Houchen Random Thought: This is the simplest explanation of the difference between the Senate, representing the states, and Congress, representing the people.Congress wants to pass an unfunded mandate for “free” healthcare. They claim the people want it and that it will only cost “X” amount of dollars. The Senate sees the words “unfunded mandate” and knows the states will be stuck with the bill. The people want “free stuff,” and Congress doesn’t care about the cost. The Senate says the states cannot afford it, and the bill never makes it to the President’s desk.That’s how it was supposed to work. Senators were answerable to state legislatures. Congressmen were answerable to the people. Once progressives passed the 17th Amendment, bringing about the direct election of senators, they became super congressmen, and no one represents the states anymore.That’s part of the reason why spending is out of control.
