The Excuses Of The LazyProverbs 22:13 “The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.” This verse shows us the lengths one will go when they are extremely slothful. The word slothful is a word that describes the person who is lazy. Sluggard is another word used to describe the same type person. I believe our verse shows us how in the mind of a lazy person they can imagine things that are not, that helps give them an excuse of why they cannot carry out every day responsibilities. What are the chances of a wild lion roaming the streets? Unless you live in Tanzania the chances are just about zero! There is a difference between having a day where you feel like doing nothing and being habitually lazy. The person who is habitually lazy always has an excuse why they cannot carry out everyday responsibilities. Laziness is a big problem in our country. The excuse of a lion being in the street is put there deliberately by the Holy Spirit to show us all how silly some excuses of the lazy actually are. I believe that Christians and the church should be helpful to those who legitimately cannot work or carry out their responsibilities (Proverbs 29:7; James 2:14-17). But we must be careful that we do not enable those who are just plain lazy (2 Thessalonians 3:10). May the Holy Spirit give us the discernment to know the difference between the two.
