They would also change altitudes en-route in attempt to find "better" air that wasn't as conducive to contrail formation. The notion of chemtrails is a sad indictment of our failed education system. That and flat earthers.

In WWII, massive fleets of bombers, radio-silence, high altitude to avoid intercept, decided to emit sky-wide WHITE trails from each engine to impact populations they were risking their lives to liberate. Great move!
