NYPD Sergeant Aml Elsokary is drawing attention after publicly saying she hopes to see 100,000 hijab-wearing women join the department in the future.
Elsokary, known as the first NYPD officer permitted to wear a hijab while on duty, highlighted the presence of about 1,200 Muslim officers in the department and 10 women currently serving while wearing hijabs.
Her comment quickly sparked debate because the proposed figure is far larger than the NYPD’s entire active-duty force, which is often listed at roughly 36,000 officers.
🔎 Could NYPD ever reach that number?👇
