The Desire Of God’s Word Psalms 119:130-131 “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.” The 119th Psalm is unusual in the fact that every verse with the exception of two references the Word of God. There are 176 verses. The obvious is that the human writer of the Psalm thought much of the Word of God. I believe the divine author, God, is trying to make the point of the importance of the Word of God in one’s life. The interpretation of Scripture is vitally important but what good is correct interpretation if one fails to make the application of the truth into his or her life? These two verses show us the Psalmist has a great desire for God’s Word. As the Word makes entrance into the heart it gives light and it gives understanding unto the simple (slow learner). This gave an increase in appetite for more! The word “panted” means to gasp and devour. The taste for God’s Word was great! Do you have such an appetite for the Word of God? I have heard people say, “I am leaving my church because I am not getting fed.” Maybe the problem is not with the deliverer of the meal. Maybe it is a loss of appetite? One preacher put it like this, “Maybe one needs to move up closer to the table.” How is your appetite for the Word? Do you devour what is given and do you long for more?
