Half a billion more pulled from a Cold War defense law meant for wartime emergencies. Then a $1.5 billion federal loan for a single coal gasification plant, on top of everything else. Meanwhile the Trump administration has spent $2.7 billion paying companies to kill wind farms. Not block them. Not delay them. Pay them to disappear. Trump tried stop-work orders first, and federal judges kept swatting them down. So Interior started cutting checks instead. Nine offshore wind leases bought out and canceled, a move no American president has ever made. The first check, about $1 billion, went to TotalEnergies. A French oil company, paid by US taxpayers to walk away from American energy, now investing the refund in oil and gas. Duke Energy took $129 million to scrap a wind farm off North Carolina that would have powered 300,000 homes. That project was expected to bring the state 37,000 jobs and $44 billion in investment. All of it gone with one signature in Washington. Eight states are suing. They call it exactly what it is, an illegal raid on public money. And here's the part that should make your blood boil when your electric bill arrives. 99% of American coal plants now cost more to keep running than to tear down and replace with clean energy. These plants were closing because they lose money. You are now paying to keep them open, and paying again for the expensive power they produce. But the best measure of this policy came from the coal industry itself. In October, the administration gave coal everything it ever asked for. Royalty rates slashed nearly in half. Thirteen million acres of public land opened to mining. Then the grand gesture: the biggest federal coal auction in more than a decade, 167 million tons in Montana. One company showed up. It bid a tenth of a penny per ton, and attached government studies politely explaining that nobody wants coal anymore. The offer was so insulting that Interior rejected it rather than let the number go public. Two more coal sales collapsed the same month. Trump bet billions of your money on coal. The coal industry itself wouldn't bet a penny.
