George Whitefield was not merely a preacher, he was a divine catalyst sent to awaken a sleeping people. In the 1730s and 1740s, as he traveled throughout the American colonies, his voice carried more than words, it carried conviction.
Thousands gathered in open fields, in city squares, and along dusty roads just to hear him proclaim the necessity of the new birth in Jesus Christ. Hearts were pierced, tears flowed, and entire communities were shaken under the power of God.
This was not religion as usual, this was revival fire. Whitefield broke denominational barriers, calling people out of dead formality and into living relationship with Jesus Christ. In doing so, he ignited what became known as the Great Awakening, a move of God that unified the colonies spiritually long before they were ever united politically.
That spiritual awakening had profound consequences. As people encountered the Lord and began to understand their identity under God, they also began to question earthly authority that contradicted truth and righteousness. Whitefield’s preaching emphasized personal accountability before God, not blind allegiance to institutions, and this helped cultivate a mindset of liberty rooted in divine order. A people who had been awakened spiritually were no longer content to be controlled or silenced.
While Whitefield himself did not preach political rebellion, the atmosphere of awakening he helped birth stirred courage, unity, and moral conviction across the colonies.
In many ways, the American Revolution was not just a political movement, it was the fruit of a spiritual one, where a revived people, gripped by truth, were prepared to stand for freedom!
America was founded on Christian principles. It’s up to us to keep them, fight for them and stand. It’s up to us to have a heart for God and His people…it’s up to us to be soul winners! Let’s continue to pray for another great spiritual awakening here in the United States of America!
I highly recommend the movie “The Great Awakening”.
