Nobody Wakes Up With a Seared Conscience A seared conscience is not something that happens overnight. No one wakes up one morning unable to feel conviction. According to the Bible, it is the result of a gradual progression. First comes conviction. God uses His Word and our conscience to show us that something is wrong (Romans 2:15). At that moment we have a choice: obey God or resist Him.If conviction is ignored, it soon becomes compromise. What once troubled us begins to trouble us less. Instead of submitting to God's Word, we begin making small exceptions. Compromise then gives birth to justification. Rather than confessing our sin, we excuse it. We convince ourselves that "it's not that bad," or "everyone else does it." Every excuse hardens the heart a little more until, eventually, the conscience becomes seared—no longer responding to conviction as it once did (1 Timothy 4:2). The danger is not that God stops speaking; the danger is that we stop listening. The good news is that God still restores those who humble themselves before Him. David's heart was hardened by sin, yet after repentance he prayed, "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10, KJV). If your heart has grown cold, do not make another excuse. Confess your sin, return to God's Word, and obey the conviction He gives today. A heart that has become hardened can once again become tender when it is surrendered to the Lord."Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10 (KJV)
