A federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to unredact additional pages of the Epstein files by July 2, including documents related to a woman who told the FBI she was violently attacked by President Donald Trump as a minor, in a ruling that puts Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche directly in the crosshairs.
U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan issued the preliminary injunction Thursday in a case brought by attorney and journalist Katie Phang, ordering redactions removed from key documents including "at least eight email exchanges with Mr. Epstein regarding a 't*rture video' and s*xual activity with young women, including minors."
Sullivan rejected the DOJ's arguments against disclosure, finding them "unpersuasive." He noted that Phang had identified "half a dozen stories she is currently unable to report" because the department had withheld the information, and dismissed the suggestion that a standard FOIA request would have been sufficient, noting the Epstein Files Transparency Act had directed a broader and less redacted release than FOIA would have required.
The woman who accused Trump was interviewed by the FBI four times and found to be credible. Even after the department released additional files related to her account, 37 pages of her testimony are still reportedly missing.
The DOJ must either produce the unredacted documents or show cause as to why it cannot comply. It did not respond to Sullivan's 1 p.m. deadline in the case. Phang said Blanche must now "put up or shut up" by July 2, adding that her suit covers "some of the most egregious, egregious email communications with Jeffrey Epstein talking about little girls being naughty" as well as Trump's accuser.
