Today the United States turns 250 years old. It is celebrating its birthday with a wrestling match on the front lawn of the White House. NPR is marking it with a piece by Princeton historian Eddie Glaude Jr. called "In America, U.S.A." — his assessment: "The divided soul of the nation is in full view."
Mexico is four days into hosting the biggest sporting event in human history. 8.3 million international visitors arrived in April alone. The opening ceremony was watched by four billion people. El Tri won 2-0. Guadalajara hosted a clean World Cup match four months after a security crisis. 6,000 local fields were renovated. A 21-year-old Indigenous woman held ticket 00001. Sheinbaum watched from the Zócalo.
On the same day the US marks a quarter millennium of existence with a national reckoning about its own divisions, the country it has spent years calling a failed state is showing the world something that doesn't require a historian to explain.
What do you think the world sees when it looks at both countries right now? Tell me in the comments.

You do realize it is only June 16 not July 4 the day we celebrate the birthday of the US.
