Mercy Still Surrounds the Throne of God
"And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.” Revelation 4:3 (KJV)
John was caught up into heaven and given a glimpse of the throne of God. What is remarkable is that before he sees the judgments that will later fall upon the earth, he sees a throne surrounded by a rainbow.
The throne reminds us of God's authority.
He reigns over all creation.
Nothing escapes His notice.
No sin goes unjudged.
No deed goes unnoticed.
God is still on the throne.
Yet surrounding that throne was a rainbow "in sight like unto an emerald." The rainbow first appeared after the Flood as a token of God's covenant mercy (Genesis 9:13). Here in Revelation, it still surrounds His throne.
What a picture!
God's power is not separated from His mercy.
His holiness is not separated from His grace.
Even as judgment approaches the earth in Revelation, the rainbow reminds us that God is faithful to His promises.
Many people view God only as a Judge.
Others view Him only as a God of love.
The Bible presents both.
The throne speaks of His righteousness.
The rainbow speaks of His mercy.
Both are found in perfect harmony in the character of God.
Today, mercy still surrounds His throne.
The invitation of salvation is still extended.
Forgiveness is still available through Jesus Christ.
But one day mercy will give way to judgment for those who reject the Saviour.
Do not wait until you stand before the throne as your Judge when you may come to Him today as your Saviour.
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
The rainbow around the throne is a reminder that God delights in mercy—but the throne reminds us that He is still God.
