Many Will Say…”
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord..." (Matthew 7:22)
One of the most sobering statements in all of Scripture is not that a few will be surprised on Judgment Day, but that many will be surprised.
Jesus did not say these people were atheists.
They called Him "Lord, Lord."
They were religious.
They spoke of Him.
They claimed to serve Him.
Some even pointed to their works:
"Have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?" (Matthew 7:22)
Yet their confidence was not in Christ; it was in what they had done for Christ.
The tragedy is that they knew about Jesus, but they did not truly know Jesus.
They had a profession, but not a possession.
They had religion, but not a relationship.
They could point to their works, but not to His finished work at Calvary.
That is why they hear the dreadful words:
"I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:23)
Notice that Jesus did not say, "I knew you once."
He said, "I never knew you." Their problem was not a loss of salvation; their problem was that they had never truly come to Him by faith.
Many today are trusting church membership, baptism, good deeds, ministry involvement, family heritage, or moral living. But none of these can save a soul. Salvation is found in Christ alone.
Before you stand before Him, make certain that your faith is in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for your sins—not in your own works.
The question is not merely, "Do you know about Him?" The question is: "Does He know you?"
"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith." (2 Corinthians 13:5)
