Every day our eyes are presented with things to desire, pursue, envy, and admire. Advertisements promise satisfaction. Entertainment promises happiness. Possessions promise security. Pride promises importance. Yet God reveals what is really behind "all that is in the world."The lust of the eyes convinces us that what we see is what we need. Eve saw that the fruit was pleasant to the eyes before she took it (Genesis 3:6). Many have fallen because they trusted their eyes more than God's Word.The lust of the flesh urges a person to satisfy every appetite without regard for God's will. The pride of life teaches a man to trust his own wisdom, boast in his achievements, and seek the praise of men rather than the approval of God.The danger is not merely what is in the world. The danger is when the world finds a place in our hearts.Satan still uses these same temptations because they still work. He deceives the eyes to capture the heart. What begins with a look often ends with a choice.The world offers glitter, but Christ offers truth. The world offers temporary satisfaction, but Christ offers eternal life. The world passes away, but God's Word endureth for ever."And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." — 1 John 2:17 (KJV)Before following what your eyes desire, ask yourself: Is this drawing me closer to Christ, or deeper into the world?
