Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall, Washington, DC - 1920 (during construction) vs 2026 (undergoing upgrades)The Reflecting Pool on the National Mall is one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington, DC. Stretching over 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, it was completed in 1923 as part of architect Henry Bacon’s original design for the Lincoln Memorial grounds. The long, narrow pool was created to provide a dramatic visual connection between the two monuments, and its mirror-like reflections have made it one of the most photographed places in the United States. The pool has required major repairs over the years because of leaking, algae growth, aging pipes and heavy visitor traffic. A significant reconstruction project took place between 2010-12, when the NPS rebuilt much of the basin and installed modern filtration systems. However, even after those repairs, ongoing maintenance problems continued to affect the pool.Right now, the pool is undergoing another large-scale renovation that began in spring 2026. The work includes draining the basin, repairing leaking joints, resurfacing the bottom, upgrading sections of the filtration system, and applying a new waterproof coating intended to improve durability and reduce future maintenance issues. The project is moving quickly because officials want the pool reopened before the nationwide 'America 250' celebrations planned for July 4, 2026, marking the country's 250th anniversary.
