Because You Are A Christian
Matthew 10:38
“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.”
Through the years I have heard various comments about one taking up their cross. One having a flat tire or a headache and other ailment or such mishaps is not taking up one’s cross. Those sort of things can happen to anyone. Taking up one’s cross speaks of the things one goes through, or faces all because they are a Christian. Your cross speaks of the troubles you go through because you are a Christian.
In the context of our text Jesus spoke of the Christian who is at variance with those in his own family (Matthew 10:35). The word variance means to cut into two separate parts. At times the Christian may find himself or herself at odds with people they love dearly. Matthew 10:34 has always been a tough verse to rest my faith on. In this verse Christ said, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” That sword is a sword of variance. There are certain truths found in the Bible that leaves no room for any compromise. The truth or doctrine is presented in one way and leaves the Christian no room to agreeably disagree. Standing on such truths can bring about a separation between two people. As a Christian when you find yourself in such separations, at variance with others, make sure it is because of your position in Scripture and not your disposition in attitude. Remain strong in your faith in God’s Word but remain sweet in your stand. If you and I as Christians must suffer, may it be for our position with Christ and not our disposition within self.
