I remember my parents and grandparents drinking water with a little baking soda mixed in. This would've been in the early 80s.

I had never heard this before. My grandma used it to brush her teeth. In her 60's, this woman would have indigestion so bad, she would pop an alka seltzer tablet in her mouth. She died of a massive heart attack a few years later.
