THE SALVATION PRAYER I was asked why our tracts do not end with a model salvation prayer so that sinners will know what to say when calling upon the Lord. If a sinner reads any of our salvation tracts carefully and allows the Lord to convict him, then he won't need anyone telling him what to pray. The scripture presented will do its work and the sinner will know that he can't save himself and that only Christ can save him. This is made clear in the gospel presentation, so it's best to let him call on the Lord in his own words rather than telling him what to say. The New Testament emphasizes BELIEVING on Christ, not salvation prayers. In the day of judgment, I don't want to hear a single lost soul say, "I prayed what they told me to pray." Salvation prayers can easily become vain repetitions, so I try to stick with the scriptures and emphasize BELIEF. After all, I've heard many people say, "I thought I was saved because I prayed a prayer." I've never heard anyone say, "I thought I was saved because I believed on Christ." When a man believes on Christ, he KNOWS that he's saved because of what happened in his heart. A sinner can be coached into repeating a prayer that never even touches his heart, so I emphasize the BELIEF, not the prayer. If the message is right and the belief is right, then any prayer will be right. Neither the repentant thief nor the publican were told what words to pray (Luke 23:42; 18:13). They called upon the Lord from their own hearts, and God answered.
