When I grew up there was hardly any AC in the whole town. Even most stores didn't have it. Groceries included. We had to go almost 50 miles to find places where a large number of stores had it, and those were mostly in malls and expensive places we'd never shop.

We didn't get AC till I was like, fourteen, and that was a decent window unit in the dining room for the downstairs.
