African-American politicians on national stage; two – Pinckney Pinchback
and James Harris – attend as delegates, and several serve as
presidential electors He
was the first African American to become Governor of a U.S. State.
Pinchback played an important role in the establishment of the Louisiana
Republican Party in the 1860’s. He was an advocate of voting rights,
civil rights, tax-supported education and the legal suppression of
discrimination.
