An A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” successfully returned to base after taking massive battle damage during an intense close air support mission under heavy enemy fire. The aircraft was riddled with more than 150 holes across its wings and fuselage, yet somehow remained controllable long enough for the pilot to safely recover the jet without injury. 🇺🇸✈️
During the engagement, several hydraulic systems used to operate the flight controls were badly damaged by ground fire. In most combat aircraft, such severe damage could easily result in catastrophic loss of control. But the A-10 was built with survivability in mind and carried a unique backup capability called manual reversion.
With hydraulic power failing, the pilot switched to this emergency system, which uses mechanical cables and linkages to control the aircraft manually. Despite the extreme damage and difficult handling conditions, the pilot managed to guide the crippled Warthog back to friendly airspace and complete a safe landing.
When maintenance crews examined the aircraft afterward, they were stunned by the extent of the damage it had endured and survived. After undergoing repairs, the A-10 was eventually returned to operational service, once again proving why the Warthog has earned a legendary reputation for toughness on the battlefield.
The incident also demonstrated the exceptional discipline and skill of A-10 pilots who continue flying even in the most dangerous combat situations. 💪
