View MoreBy the time a boy reached a certain age the question of "to cry or not to cry" depended upon certain variables. For instance, if Mommy was there (and it was ONLY her, no other witnesses) then crying was a given. You could bawl your eyes out -- "Oh my baby, what's wrong, what's wrong?" -- and you could soak up her hugs and kisses with a few cookies after the catastrophe was over. Naturally if you were outside the house, you had to gird you loins; climb over the fence, run through a couple of alleys, through the yard and into the back door before you could let the sobbing begin for Mommy's benefit. "Oh my poor baby!" Dads required a different tact. If you were right there with him and you scraped yourself, or whatever, a brief tear or two was permissible but not TOO permissible. “All right, that's enough. You're not hurt so quit the water works. What are you? A girl?” A brave sniffle and a quick suck-it-up earned you what you really required; Dad smiling at you while patting your back, and ruffling your hair: “That's my little man!” (We'll get to a truly serious injury in a moment.) When you were with your friends you didn't cry at all. Oh no. You had to put on the brave face, rub a little dirt on the boo-boo while your friends admired your courage and your stock went up with them. However, for truly serious situations; say you fall out of the tree and break something, and your brain takes over and screams “I don't give a damn WHO'S here, I'm going to cry” then crying was OK. Your friends would all put a hand on you to provide emotional comfort while they figured out where the nearest helpful grownup might be. Dad's come in at this point. Seeing you are really REALLY hurt a dad will do whatever it takes, move heaven and earth to find some medical assistance. “Oh please, God, please make my little boy OK again.” Once you are lying in your hospital bed with your cast elevated, Dad can put his “dad face” back on as he pats you on the arm: “Awww, you'll be OK, son.”
