Financial Autonomy and CreditOwn credit in their own name: In many places (like the United States), it wasn’t until the passing of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 that women could apply for a credit card or a bank loan without a male relative or husband to co-sign.Control their own wages: Depending on where they lived, husbands had legal control over their wives' earnings.Keep their jobs during pregnancy: Before the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 in the US, women could legally be fired for simply being pregnant. 2. Bodily and Reproductive AutonomyAccess to birth control: In many parts of the world, married women could not legally obtain contraceptives without their husband's consent. In the United States, for example, the Supreme Court didn't fully legalize contraception for all married couples until Griswold v. Connecticut in 1965.Safe and legal healthcare: Reproductive rights were severely restricted or criminalized, taking away a woman's right to control when and if she wanted to bear children .3. Protection from AbuseMarital rape was legal: The legal system historically viewed a woman as her husband's property, and the concept of marital rape was not universally recognized as a crime until the late 20th century. In the US, it wasn't criminalized in all 50 states until 1993.Protections against domestic violence: Battered women’s shelters and robust restraining orders did not exist. Leaving a volatile or abusive situation was exceedingly difficult because women often lacked the financial means or legal backing to do so.4. Professional & Educational RightsFreedom from workplace discrimination: Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (US) prohibited employment discrimination on the basis of sex, but for years, professions like law, medicine, and engineering had de facto quotas or outright bans on admitting women.Ivy League access: Many top-tier universities and military academies barred women from attending. For example, Yale and Princeton didn’t go fully co-ed until 1969, and Harvard integrated its undergraduate student body fully in 1977.5. Legal EqualityEqual Rights Amendment (ERA): In the United States, the ERA was first proposed in 1923 to guarantee equal rights under the law regardless of sex.
