A Philadelphia High School student made a couple videos showing that other students in his school CAN NOT READ, and those that could were unable to put into their own words what they read meant. So they can't read and do not have basic reading comprehension skills.
We experience that HERE as well, with grown adults. But this has been a problem in our public schools for some time now; and more so in "minority" communities (which make up the majority IN those communities). This is not just an issue for those students, but the problem is amplified in those places.
The problem is with the schools, the students, and the parents. It is a combination of the three. But make no mistake it IS a problem. We are producing more and more third world level educated and mental ability citizens. And no this is NOT a Covid era problem. This was happening BEFORE that. And there is no excuse for students of this age being this lacking.
And how is the school dealing with this? They are threatening to expel the student who made the video, not let him go to the prom, and not walk in the graduation ceremony.
To say that is as unacceptable as the inability of students to read and comprehend what they read is an understatement.
This said, the answer to this problem is not some mystery. You hold students accountable, you make them do the work, you get parents involved, and you TEACH them. This isn't rocket science. And most of the issues revolve around NO standards, pushing students through the grades to get the end graduation numbers (which become meaningless), lack of discipline, and the standard social issues we see. Just do the OPPOSITE! It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.
But that takes personal accountability and WORK from everyone involved. And well, we can't have THAT in our new progressive society. It's insane, and it's helping destroy our nation. And these students are the upcoming ADULTS, who will be in the workforce (maybe), and can VOTE.
