"BUT AMNON HAD A FRIEND"
"And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.
But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man."(2 Samuel 13:1-3)
"But Amnon had a friend." Yeah, Amnon had a friend alright, a good for nothing friend by the name Jonadab, his own cousin. We see right from the get-go there in verse 3 how the Bible describes Jonadab as "a very subtil man." We all know who comes to mind when we hear that word "subtil", don't we? Take a peek at Genesis 3:1 and you'll find out who that is. Jonadab's name is mentioned 5 times in the Bible, and if you ask me, that's 5 times too many.
Now, Amnon thought he was "IN LOVE" with his brother Absalom's sister Tamar, which later on proved that he was really "IN LUST" with her. When Amnon finally spilled the beans one day to Jonadab about why he was so torn up over this young lady, Tamar, Jonadab's sick and sexually putrid mind devised a plan (2 Samuel 13:4-5). He certainly lived up to the meaning of his name "subtil" didn't he?
That whole vulgar plan of Jonadab turned out rotten because it was rotten from the beginning (2 Samuel 13:6-31). Amnon's pretended sickness ended with perverted sex with an unwilling Tamar. To put it bluntly, it was rape and incest in the first degree!
Later on, in verse 32, Jonadab had the gall to tell King David, in so many words, that Amnon's death was the result of his own doings in raping Absalom's sister. Yeah, don't step up to the plate there and fess up to your uncle David that it was you, Jonadab, that put that filthy idea into Amnon's head. Jonadab, and people like him, are nothing but a bunch of bums bent on passing the blame.
We need to stay alert and always on our guard with people who have questionable agendas so that we don't get lured into their wicked schemes. Proverbs 1:10 reminds us, "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not." Paul warns each of us, "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners." (1 Corinthians 15:33)
Friends, do you have a friend like Jonadab? Then run for the hills from and don't even waste your time hanging out with those whose advice reeks with the stench of sin. Again, keep in mind those words the Holy Spirit inspired there, "But Amnon had a friend."
