The Talebearer
Proverbs 26:20-22
“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.”
The talebearer is defined as one who murmurs, slanders, a whisperer. As our text shows, like wood keeps a fire burning, a talebearer keeps the tale on going. The talebearer can keep strife going. And if the talebearer stops their tales then the strife will cease. Also, a contentious man (a man full of strife) does not need much kindling to get his fire going. One spark of a talebearer sets him off in great strife. The damage or the wounds of a talebearer cut very deep, “into the innermost parts of the belly”. Nothing good can be said about the talebearer. Sadly, the talebearer can be found sitting in a pew on Sunday morning at the local church. May God show mercy to those who are talebearers.
