PREACHERS, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!
I keep hearing preachers ranting about the need to preach expository messages instead of topical messages, yet no one ever backs this up with scripture. What they continually overlook is the fact that some of us already exposit by teaching verse by verse two or three times per week, so one topical message per week only adds a bit of balance. God never said that expository preaching or topical preaching were right or wrong; he just said to preach and teach the word. In fact, you'll find far more topical preaching in the Bible than expository (Paul at Mars Hill, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Steven before the Sanhedrin, Peter on Pentecost, etc.).
Besides, why can't topical preaching also be expository by backing up the message with factual scripture? If a man is preaching God's word, then leave him alone and let him decide what balance is best for his ministry. You preachers who keep telling everyone else how to preach need to plough your own rows and let the rest of us do the same. After all, some of you are never in a single church long enough to know WHAT it needs, and sometimes this probably even applies to your own church, since you are so busy preaching in every other pulpit under the sun. If someone is preaching or teaching false doctrine, then they need to be corrected, but if not, then mind your own business, tend to your own flock, and stop sowing discord by causing people to have doubts about their preachers.
