Yes, I know this is NOT an electric, but a gas water heater. This is a case where electricity was grounded, shorted or mis-wired to the point electricity found a way to ground out through the gas line. Gives me the woolies just thinking about it.
If that thin copper tube does melt and breach, it's going to be horrible.

I've heard of using water pipes as a ground in the old days but not a gas line! Wow!
