Captured. Tortured. Forgotten by the World — But He Never Broke 🙏
In 1963, U.S. Army Green Beret James “Nick” Rowe was ambushed and captured by the Viet Cong deep in the jungles of South Vietnam.
For more than five brutal years, he endured unimaginable suffering—starved, beaten, and isolated under conditions meant to destroy both body and mind.
The world believed he was dead.
But he refused to give in.
Rowe made a critical choice that saved his life—he hid his identity as a Special Forces soldier. He outwitted his captors, resisted their interrogations, and held on to hope when everything around him said to surrender.
After several failed attempts, he finally seized his moment.
On December 31, 1968, he made a daring escape—and was rescued by U.S. forces in the Mekong Delta.
But his story didn’t end there.
Instead of walking away, Rowe turned his suffering into something greater. He helped build the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) program—training generations of soldiers how to survive captivity and come home with honor.
Years later, he answered the call once more. Serving as an intelligence officer in the Philippines, he worked to dismantle terrorist networks—until he was assassinated by the New People’s Army on April 21, 1989.
In his memoir Five Years to Freedom, he left behind a truth forged in pain and resilience:
“Survival is a state of mind.”
His courage. His sacrifice. His unbreakable spirit—still live on in every warrior who refuses to quit.
God bless this true American legend.
