This photo was taken in 1909, in the village of Hah in Tur Abdin. It shows a Syriac Orthodox Assyrian monk and nun standing quietly in front of St. Mary’s Church ⛪—one of the most ancient churches in the world, built in the 1st century. For nearly two thousand years, this sacred place carried the prayers, tears, and hopes of generations. It was more than a church—it was the heart of a people ❤️.
They stand there in peace, with calm faces and gentle strength. They could not know what was coming… only a few years later, everything would be broken.
A great tragedy fell upon all Christians under the Ottoman Empire—Assyrians, Armenians, Greeks, Maronites, and others ⚔️. What followed was suffering beyond words. Villages were destroyed, churches burned, and entire communities erased 💔💔. Mothers cried for their children, fathers were taken, grandparents were lost… and even babies 👶💔—innocent lives who had just begun—were not spared. Families disappeared together. Many were killed, many thrown into pits, others fled to the mountains in fear—never returning home.
The result was devastating—over 3.5 million lives lost 💔.
Millions of hearts broken… families gone… a whole world changed forever.
Ancient churches like this one fell silent… ⛪
Homes were left empty…
The land itself became full of sorrow… 😔
Those who survived were forced to leave everything behind, scattered across nearby lands and far countries, carrying only memories, grief, and broken hearts 💔.
When we look at this photo today, it hurts deeply. We don’t just see a monk and a nun—we see a whole life, a whole people, just before everything was taken from them. A quiet moment before endless pain.
And yet, even after all this darkness, something still lives ✨—their faith, their identity, their memory. Though hearts were shattered into pieces, they were never completely lost 🕊️.
