19. Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?Luke 7:19. John the Baptist, in prison and also Jesus's cousin, sends two men to Jesus, seeking confirmation that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus immediately heals the sick, casts out demons, and gives sight to the blind. John is uncertain of Jesus's mission, thinking if Jesus was the Messiah, why wasn't Israel saved from Roman rule Jesus sends them back, saying, "Tell John what you see: the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1-2 is fulfilled." We are reassured in Christ because of His works. Jesus turns to the crowd and asks, "What did you go out to the wilderness to see?" They witnessed John, committed to God's calling, bold, steadfast, and faithful. Jesus commends John's humility and obedience and reveals that those covered under the New Covenant may surpass John's experience. The lesson learned is that those who see God's truth through the works of Jesus and respond in faith, even in uncertainty, will realize that God values a humble and obedient heart above outward appearances, social position, or wealth. Bring questions and doubts to God honestly. Understand that God looks different to everyone, but He honors an obedient and receptive heart. Amen.
