Democrat Volunteer Busted Stealing Encrypted Election Key Days Before Narrow Flip of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago District
Palm Beach County, Florida – Just days before a special election that flipped a longtime Republican state House seat by a razor-thin 800 votes, a 59-year-old Democrat elections volunteer was caught red-handed stealing an encrypted access key and sensitive computer gear from a voter registration terminal.
John D. Panicci slipped the key during a volunteer training session on March 19 at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office. The March 24 vote handed Democrat Emily Gregory a slim victory over Trump-endorsed Republican Jon Maples in District 87 – the very district that includes President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at Panicci’s Lake Worth home on March 28 and recovered the stolen key plus a haul of electronic devices and storage drives. He now faces grand theft and computer equipment charges, sitting in county jail on $6,000 bail with orders to stay away from the elections office.
Officials claim the key only worked on training databases and insist no actual voter systems were compromised. But conservatives aren’t buying the spin. A device that could be reverse-engineered and plugged into real registration kiosks raises serious red flags about potential tampering with voter rolls right before ballots were cast.
Republicans are rightly demanding a full recount and deeper investigation into whether this theft – and whatever else might have gone on – tainted the results. In a district that should have stayed red, Democrats pulled off an upset win just five days after one of their own was rummaging through election hardware.
This isn’t some harmless mix-up. It’s another glaring example of why election integrity matters and why blind trust in the system is a sucker’s bet. Floridians – and every American – deserve paper ballots, strict ID checks, and zero tolerance for shady volunteers poking around sensitive equipment. Anything less invites exactly the kind of suspicion now exploding in Palm Beach County. Time for real answers, not more excuses.
