32. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Luke 5:32.
Jesus sees a publican named Levi, a tax collector.
These Jews are considered traitors and are hated because they work for the Roman Empire.
They cheated on taxes, keeping the overpayment for themselves.
Jesus walks by and says to him, "Follow me." And he left all and followed Jesus—house, job, friends, and wealth.
And he is so happy, he makes a great feast at his house so his friends can meet Jesus.
The Pharisees speak against Jesus and His disciples because they are eating with sinners.
Jesus says, "They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick."
Jesus, with all His teaching, miracles, and sacrifice, cannot save those who will not own up to their sins.
Today's verse: Jesus did not come to sinners convinced they are holy.
Jesus came to those who see they are dead in sins and without hope.
These will find the Savior Jesus, the Son of the Living God, the Physician of their souls, with open arms, full of mercy and forgiveness. Amen.
