“Land Shark!” 🦈
First aired on November 8, 1975, during the Candice Bergen episode, Land Shark was one of the first signs that Saturday Night Live was willing to be completely, gloriously ridiculous.
The setup was perfect. A woman alone in her apartment. A knock at the door.
“Candygram.”
“Plumber.”
“Flowers.”
And then — chaos.
It was a dead-simple parody of Jaws, but that was the genius of it. Early SNL knew how to take a massive pop-culture obsession and twist it just enough to make it unforgettable. No expensive effects. No overthinking. Just nerve, timing, and total commitment.
And with Gilda Radner in the sketch, it lands even harder. She never played “scared” halfway. She threw herself into the bit completely, which is why the joke still works all these years later.
No sketch better captures the weird, scrappy brilliance of 70s SNL.
Not polished. Not subtle. Just hilariously committed insanity.
Still one of the best punchlines the show ever aired.
