Interesting read. 👇
In 1789, shortly after the new government was established, George Washington issued the nation’s first official Thanksgiving Proclamation. In it, he called Americans to set aside a day to thank God for the birth of the nation.
Washington wrote:
“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”
He asked the American people to give thanks for:
• God’s protection
• The new Constitution
• The freedoms the nation had been given
In other words, America’s first president officially called the entire nation to publicly thank God (the God of the Bible) and seek His blessing.
Another piece of American history many people have never been told!
