18. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
Mark 14:18.
Jesus shares the Passover meal with His inner circle, the 12 disciples.
This occurs before Jesus is arrested.
Jesus reveals that one eating with them will betray Him to those seeking to murder Him.
Jesus is deeply saddened because He loves His disciples, yet He knows what is about to happen.
Jesus is fully aware of the sinfulness of mankind and is determined to fulfill God's plan of salvation.
Judas's sin is the fulfillment of prophecy, as Judas will act according to God's plan to redeem humanity.
The lesson to be learned is that betrayal can come from friends; closeness does not ensure loyalty.
This passage reminds readers that even in moments of fellowship and trust, human weakness and sin exist, yet Jesus goes forward to complete God's will, showing caution, faith, and forgiveness.
Jesus's sacrificial act unto death restored fallen man's relationship back to Almighty God, through repentance and obedient living. Amen.
