34. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after durst ask him any question.
Mark 12:34.
Jesus is teaching in the temple. Being surrounded by the religious leaders. A scribe, an expert in Jewish law, asks, which commandment is the most important?
Out of the 613 commandments, Jesus says, love God fully, with everything you have: all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
This means all emotions, thoughts, and actions should point to God, showing complete devotion.
And to love others as you love yourself, meaning genuine love for God will be expressed in our kindness, empathy, and care for others.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
The scribe says, You have spoken the truth about loving God, and to love others is greater than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
Then we come to today's verse.
Jesus' teaching is that love is more important than rituals or ceremonies; love is action, not just a feeling.
No man ever asked Jesus a question to ensnare Him with words; they saw they could get no advantage, Jesus having silenced the Herodians, Sadducees, Scribes, and Pharisees. Amen.
