20. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Mark 10:20. A rich man asks Jesus what he needed to do to be saved. Jesus says, "Keep the commandments." The man asks, "Which ones?" Jesus says, "Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not lie, honor your parents, love your neighbor as yourself." The man says, "I have done all this since I was a child." Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said, "One thing is missing: sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and come, follow Me." The man went away exceedingly sorrowful. We find these lessons: Eternal life is a gift from God, not something we can earn by following rules. Being a disciple of Christ requires complete devotion; nothing can come before Jesus. Attachment to worldly things will hinder spiritual growth. God's power makes salvation possible; even as we fail, do not quit, keep showing up. Putting God first leads to spiritual and eternal rewards; anything sacrificed for Jesus will be more than compensated. Mark challenges believers to value God above everything, be willing to make sacrifices for Jesus, and trust Jesus for His power of salvation. Amen.
