Sacra di San Michele, Italy
The Sacra di San Michele, or Abbey of Saint Michael, is a historic religious complex perched atop Mount Pirchiriano in the Val di Susa, near Turin, Italy. Recognized as the symbolic monument of the Piedmont region, it has inspired literary works such as Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose .
🏰 History & Significance
Construction of the abbey began between 983 and 987, possibly initiated by Archbishop John Vincent of Ravenna. It evolved from a small hermitage to a prominent Benedictine monastery during the 11th to 15th centuries. The abbey's strategic location made it a key stop on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. After a period of decline and abandonment, it was restored in 1835 under the guidance of Antonio Rosmini and is currently maintained by the Rosminians.
