Stop Trying To Be The Good Samaritan.
We’ve read this story wrong our entire lives. We think we are the hero who stops to help. But in this parable, you aren’t the one offering the rescue.
You are the one in the ditch.
Jesus told this story to a religious expert who wanted a checklist for eternal life. He wanted to know what he had to do. So Jesus gave him a scenario that destroyed his pride.
Picture the road to Jericho. A man is stripped, beaten, and left half-dead.
Half-dead.
Brethren, that detail is very significant. A half-dead man cannot call for help. He cannot negotiate or contribute to his own rescue. He is helpless.
That is us without Jesus.
Religion (the Priest and Levite) walks by. They aren't just being mean; they are proving a point; that The Law can diagnose your wounds, but it cannot heal them. Rules cannot raise the dead.
Then, the Samaritan comes. The outcast. The enemy.
He doesn't wait for an apology. He gets into the dirt, pours wine (the blood) and oil (the Spirit). He puts the man on his own animal and pays the full debt at the inn.
Jesus is the Samaritan.
He didn't save you because you were lovable. He saved you because He is love. He paid a bill you could never afford.
The Gospel isn't about trying harder to be the hero. It's realizing you were the beggar, and someone finally stopped for you.
Rest in that rescue.
