The Boy and The Red Balloon
A young boy sitting on the edge of a swing
His tiny hands held on tight to the edge of the seat
The swing held by one rusty chain and a red balloon
His bent head and shoulders presented a look of defeat
The rope attached to his balloon
Dangling in the summer air
Caught against a rock hewn ledge
The young boy unaware of his fragile tether there
His sorrow was evident in his downcast stare
He wanted to rise with the crimson orb into the blue
Upon the swing seat floating out of sight
A place well known in his dreams he flew
Travel away from the bully that threatened
There with his floating silent friend
He could wish upon that yonder star
And be where happy moments would never end
But then he wouldn’t see his Mom and Dad
With his heart divided between misery and love
His innocent heart knew the answer
As his wish was paused to fly above
He raised his head and saw his red balloon
Waiting for him to decide to let go
Release the swing and let them fly
Way up high where only his dreams would know
He hopped off the swing and turned to see
The red balloon floating out of sight
In his eyes a glistening tear could be seen
As he headed home before the day became night
