The tragic murder of 19-year-old Dacara Thompson highlights the devastating consequences of our broken border policies. Last August, this young Maryland woman was strangled in the home of Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, a Guatemalan national living here illegally. He then callously disposed of her body by throwing it off a bridge into the Anacostia River area.Law enforcement arrested Hernandez-Mendez in September 2025 after a tip led them to him; he now faces serious charges including murder and evidence tampering, with ICE holding a detainer for deportation once justice is served. Yet cases like this expose how sanctuary-style leniency allows dangerous individuals to remain in our communities.Strong borders and robust enforcement of immigration laws are essential to protect American lives—especially vulnerable young women like Dacara.
