We were raised with less comfort but more freedom, and somehow that shaped us in ways nothing else could. We learned how to entertain ourselves, how to problem-solve, and how to live without constant supervision. Dirt didn’t scare us, boredom forced creativity, and consequences taught responsibility. Life wasn’t padded, but it was real. We didn’t grow up perfect, but we grew up resilient. And that resilience followed us into adulthood.
Looking back, it wasn’t about what we lacked, it was about what we gained. We learned respect, patience, and gratitude without realizing it. The world didn’t revolve around us, and that taught humility. Those lessons don’t always show up on a screen or in a textbook. They show up in character, grit, and common sense. And despite everything, we turned out just fine.

It was a perfect childhood. Somehow, parents have lost that over the years. It’s like society no longer wants self reliance, self determination or self made success. It’s been heavily diluted. I see it happening to my 4 year old grandson, but how do you tell your son that he’s got it all wrong?
