This is Nadia Mohamed, the Democratic Mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota – the first Somali-American woman elected mayor in the United States. In a recent video, she said this:“I think most Somalis right now are afraid... because when we look at America, America is losing its Americanness. Not in the same way that MAGA says it, no, no, no, no, but because like it is just slowly becoming something that we don't recognize it to be America, right?”Let that sink in.An immigrant who came to America fleeing hardship, who now holds elected office as a Democrat, is openly saying that America no longer feels like the America she recognized. She says Somalis are afraid and that our country is losing what makes it uniquely American. She quickly adds “not in the same way that MAGA says it” – but the core statement remains: America is changing, and not for the better. The country that welcomed her and millions of others is, in her own words, becoming unrecognizable. Why are immigrant communities afraid right now? What policies or changes have made America feel foreign even to those who chose to make it their home?Is it the return to law and order? Is it the enforcement of immigration laws that have been ignored for years? Or is it something else?Mayor Mohamed’s words speak for themselves. Even leaders from communities that overwhelmingly support Democrats are expressing deep concern about the direction of our country. This isn’t about left or right – this is about whether America still feels like America to the people living here. What do YOU think is causing America to “lose its Americanness”?
