In Memphis, Tennessee, a rescue dog named Hank formed a strong bond with his temporary foster caregiver in just a few days. When he was moved to a different foster home for heartworm treatment, Hank escaped by unlocking the door. Over the next two days, he navigated across the city, covering an estimated 11 miles through various neighborhoods to return to his original caregiver's porch. After he returned, the caregiver decided to adopt him permanently. This remarkable journey showcases the power of a dog's sense of smell—dogs can sometimes detect odors over long distances, and under perfect conditions they’ve been reported to smell objects or people from as far as ~20 km.
